Description
Black Mountain is very close to our home in Henderson, NV. It is in the North McCullough Range and is a landmark mountain south of the Las Vegas Valley. I hike there frequently, and love the wilderness feeling so close to home. The hike starts in the desert and then progresses to sharp lava rocks. This yucca is one of the typical plants that I see there, another is the agave plant. Yuccas are widely planted in the western US as a landscape plant. Most species generally tolerate heat and cold, requiring little care and low water. These plants offer a decorative accent to the rural landscape of the mountain. They create great photographic opportunities to produce some great wall art landscapes - nature's artwork!

The scenic view from Black Mountain is sure to clear up anyone's chronic claustrophobia. The landscape of the mountain is volcanic in origin, has black lava cliffs on the east side of the mountain. Black Mountain can be hiked year round. In the summer though hiking the mountain will be hot and may be unsafe, there are snakes that come out during the summer. The airline pilots call it Snake Mountain. On clear days, you will be able to see Spirit Mountain to the south; deep into Arizona to the east; Mt. Potosi, Red Rock Canyon, and the Spring Mountains to the west; and the Sheep Range, the Muddy Mountains, and the Mormon Mountains to the north - not to mention all of Las Vegas filling the valley at your feet. In 2002, Congress designated the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area and North McCullough Wilderness Area, which forever protect the North McCullough Mountains from the encroachment of sprawl.
