Beautiful shot, Alan. I didn't get to those falls, but did get to the bottom of the Grand canyon years ago. You have to wonder, with the dwindling water supply of the Colorado River, how the ecology of the canyon will be affected. L/F

Alan Socolik replied:

hopefully the canyon will remain just as beautiful for generations to come... thanks!

Artist's Description

This beautiful waterfall, Mooney Falls, is located in the village of Supai, on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, which is at the western end of the Grand Canyon. To reach this location, you must either hike or ride a donkey 8 miles down to the village, then hike an additional 3 miles to get to the falls. It requires at least an overnight stay. To reach the bottom of the falls, I climbed through a cave and down a slippery makeshift ladder. The waterfall and rock formations combined to make this colorful artwork.

The trailhead is located at Hualapai Hilltop (which is located at the end of BIA Road 18), where there is a large parking lot, a heli-pad, portable toilets, and the main office for the Havasupai. The trail can be traveled by foot, by horseback, or on a mule service the Havasupai offer. The mule service can also be purchased for luggage/packs only, which allows an easier hike and the ability to bring down more luxuries. The trail starts out at th...

About Alan Socolik

Alan Socolik

Alan and Marcia, Nevada residents, are avid photographers. Alan takes many photos while hiking around the area – you will see some of his dramatic landscape photos in our portfolio. Marcia looks at things from a different perspective – her photos are usually still life or photos of objects that she finds interesting or unique. Together, they present the eclectic display of photos which you see here. As you can see, Marcia is camera-shy - she would rather be behind the lens than in front of it.
